If Apple considers it’s salvo of IP filings on mobile interactions to be defensible in court I sincerely hope Nintendo covered their ass. I hate to say it but other than camera interaction (good luck with anything other than gross movement) I don’t really see anything I would consider to be ‘next level’ gaming interaction based on what I can see and read up on online. The whole ‘handing off of the ball’ is unique, but how far can you push that? It should be noted that Nintendo kind of blew it with regards to camera and other accessory tie-ins to date from a platform standpoint. Read up on it at Kotaku.

go nintendo go!

340x_gameboyfinalcompI love seeing stuff like this where Consumer Electronics manufacturers literally take aim at one another. In this case Nintendo, via interview with WSJ basically throws down and says ‘we ain’t scared’ to all of it’s peers. Since they have a stranglehold on the youth demographic it’s well served, although Little Big Planet represents vulnerability to say the least. Do they deserve points for style–absolutely. Need a killer throwback vinyl cover for your macbook? Snatch one up for less than $20 from my vote for ‘Best of Etsy ‘09′ (even though he watermarks his images which I h8) right here.

Yup–feeling really nerdy today but you can’t argue with this logic, can you? Apparently there is somehow a FM Radio and .mp3 Player also included to boot…via Giz. I want the instructions!

Tron viral experience

From what I can tell there is no set definition for a true ‘Viral’ experience. I do, however believe that this one ranks highly among those that I have read about because it effectively bridges the gap between several different methods of communication and types of media. Flynn’s Arcade was a temporary space created as the destination for ardent Tron sequel fans who bounced around the web on a virtual scavenger hunt for clues on the whereabouts of the main character, Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges. Whereas this was the culmination of a search it wasn’t just a simple arcade, the likes of which are rare to say the least these days.

Those that made the trek were treated to branded arcade games and a jumbo Lazy Susan/Turntable that had a killer movie prop, almost guaranteed to bolster interest in the film. Even the harshest sci-fi critic would be hard pressed not to be excited about a lit up futuristic motorcycle while unreleased Daft Punk pounds away in the background. So, a production company puts time, effort, and enough money to create websites plus cover the overhead of a uniquely detailed arcade and what do they really get back? At best they see a Butterfly Effect radiating from Comic Book Convention attendees that go online and blog (ahem) about the experience as well as get somewhat free exposure without going through the effort of marketing the hell out of things.

paranoids

When it’s done with this degree of detail it seems more genuine, less of an artificial crafting. Suspending disbelief that this is just a small scale promotional effort must have been difficult but I would have to say it has worked well since the movie isn’t releasing until December. Just to review: Starting at a website, bouncing around the internets to shadow sites, and ending at an arcade playing the Soundtrack (once again, Daft Punk!) that shows off a prototype motorcyle prop used for the movie is a pretty solid effort in my opinion for a movie that hasn’t placed any meatspace ads yet. If you want to see the teaser website that was used to track doen the arcade itself look here. Check it out the tip-off article here.

I love it when people take familiar fictional characters and project onto them. It’s one part psychoanalysis and two parts hilarity. Genius.

sony aino

if i only had the fingertip size of a 14 year old girl this would be perfect

sony phones make us feel self-conscious of fat fingers, bordering on discrimination

Sony Ericsson’s Aino phone has some compelling features when it comes to multimedia, allowing you to use your PS3 as a remote server for content. Add 3G speed and a camera that geotags and keeps current with the competition by porting directly to various social networking vehicles this phone does everything but, uhm, play Sony games. Yup, still ignoring that smallish market–their bread and butter.

cover-_sonyplaystation1Really, not even first generation playstation game support? I guess it doesn’t matter all that much since you have to have less than or equal to 15th percentile hand size to use the navigation keys anyways. Still, to me that is some seriously low hanging fruit/money left on the table/opportunity to lock people into a profitable subscription model. Do I need to map out the business plan via .ppt file for you people? Well, at least they aren’t as bad as the slumbering, stumbling giant Microsoft is when it comes to both Mobile Services and Multimedia.

society + video games

It’s good to see that one news network isn’t afraid to take on the larger issues these days. For subjects like this I’m happy the Onion News Network is out there.

It doesn’t get much nerdier than this. Finally Wisconsin gives itself a reason (other than beer/cheese) to be part of the US.

The worst white-boy rap ever. If you can keep a straight face while you watch this you either have no sense of humor or are too young to have been brought up with a Nintendo 64. Via Geekologie.
