designers-july-1961-playboy

George Nelson, Edward Wormley, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Charles Eames and Jens Risom’s egos all fit into one room for a Playboy Magazine, July 1961 photo shoot. I wonder if you could do the same with today’s ‘brand name’ design crew–or who they might be, for that matter. Via theselvedgeyard

Red had a really good run this week. Time to change things up.

new new balance 1500

new-balance-1500-fall-2010-front

Classic reinterpretation of an old theme. Suede and mesh uppers in either gray on gray or gray on some ‘not quite maroon dark red.’ I heart either color combination but the breath of fresh air is the more aggressive styling being brought to the detailing. Take the acute angles as opposed to the gentle curvatures of the toe caps for example. It’s pushing things into the future while carrying the retro along with in terms of proportion when it comes to the mesh vs. leather. I”m kinda pissed I have to wait until the fall with these. union motorcycle classics

yamaha_frame

Who knew that you could find some progressive motorcycle overhauling in a 100 year old dairy barn in Idaho? As a small five man team, one of which is the owner of Glass From The Past which manufacture vintage replacement components, Union Motorcycle Classics strip bikes down to the frame and rebuilds with a focus on minimalism. They have some nice bikes on their gallery but my faves are the 50cc Yamaha (orange/red powder coated frame) and the stripped down Ducati (one subtle touch of shop-signature color). Via Pipeburn, which was once again spot-on in their review.

Take the diagram from four posts below and look closely at the bottom circle and it’s overlaps. Whatever, I still heart the screen saver friendly body of work. Not all images in the set are created equal (below), but that being said there are some that really push the limit in terms of creativity (above). And of course, Photoshop. Check out the entire Public Flikr Pool here. Via i09 (I think)…

soap, by tyler durden

fight-club-soap

No idea how long it will take trademark lawyers to catch up with the makers of Fight Club Soap, so get it while you can.  I think that Chuck Palahniuk himself would appreciate knowing these were out there, and that they are safe to use. Even if you are going to mount them on your wall, I’m still not sure how anyone feels about paying $25 for a pair of bars of soap. Oh wait, people do it all the time at Ulta, right? Via uncrate

knockaround belt

belt_silver_thumbSince the white leather belt revolution is now dead (outside of New Jersey) enjoy a throwback sailor-style nylon offering instead. Not bad for $16 with a decent logo if you ask me.

star player high-top

concon

is proving that he can reach into the vault of Converse and keep coming up with looks that keep Converse fresh. Case in point is the mash-up of the classic leather basketball high top and what his collaboration is best known for: a pared down Chuck Taylor. I heart how he maintains the sole while altering the rest, sticking to very simple colorways, shape/format of detailing, and sparing use of leather.  Get them here for $125.

If Mario and René Magritte got together I would imagine the result would be this. $10 until the end of the week on Threadless.
