Because it shouldn’t have to be Summer to enjoy ‘Summer Hours.’

It’s snippets like this that make me appreciate the difference between Vimeo and YouTube; Cut Reels and Trailers ported directly online in (somewhat) lossless format tend to be within the realm of Vimeo more often than…….videos of people dancing along to Beyonce. Japanese production studio Bonsajo’s killer logowork combined with a fresh and clean approach to animation makes a statement without too much fuss, and is something that functions well while taking less than a minute of your precious Friday afternoon.

coachella 2010 lineup

coachella2010-500x666

It has taken me about a week for this to set in. I attended back in 2004 and was astounded at how f’n hot it was, but was thrilled with that lineup even though it pales in comparison with this year’s. Issue at hand is that Indio, California is in the desert and doesn’t overcome any degree of hipness involved. I’m thinking I could stage a comeback and spend $30 a day on water for the setlist above, although I argue some of the artist split outs by day, and predictibly the poster’s artist font sizes/boldfacing. Biggest draw for me is definitely below since I hear they do a killer hybrid live/animated/puppet show:

reebok’s 2010 opportunity

reebok-fallwinter2010-military-pack-1-540x382

I remember the Pump as vividly as I do Jr. High, but without the clumsy underpinnings of being a 13 years old wearing a hypercolor t-shirt and a complete lack of basketball skills. With the resurgence of the thicker, chunky high top Reebok has the chance to re-launch one of their signature shoes and late 80’s throwback icon in a high-brow, fashion centric way. It would seem that this effort is on the right track with uniform colorways and a contrasting liner but a large degree of potential remains (goodbye gloss plastic detailing). My advice? Take the Converse route, bring in some brand name designers, and get me a pair of kicks I can inflate/deflate/inflate while bored in meetings! Image Via HighSnobriety.

beatles mapped by data

beatles

Mike Deal is a graphic designer on a data-mining mission. It seems that obsessively charting The Beatles’ activity across various metrics and in several different visual ways. Difficult part is that there is so much information that it’s difficult to format in ways that come across legibly online, or in print in sub-poster size. In a very new-age manner this is an open source project in process that you can join on it’s dedicated site here. Seen this on a few blogs this week, hard to cite a single source.

barry schwartz, more is less

the_paradox_of_choice-large
I love the stance Barry takes: Economic affluence and increased effectiveness of marketing over the past few decades has resulted in the proliferation of choice for almost every good and service today. Branding, umbrella organizations and conglomerates taking advantage of supply chain efficiencies due to component and ingredient overlaps have resulted in Brand proliferation. So, what does that boil down to? Something I thought that only my wife and I felt: Too much choice overwhelms, and you can read about it in his book, Paradox of Choice.

Now we have ridiculous cereal aisles and a dizzying array of salad dressing selections.  The net result of too much choice is higher expectations set across the board, which in turn leads to either Paralysis by Analysis or (arguably) Mild Depression due to increased opportunity cost. With so many choices to select from it’s possible that no matter what we choose it will seem as if we made a mistake due to the amount of other available options; even if those options were inferior. Guess what just made my 2010 reading list…..man do i hate the formatting of Ted videos, making them clumsy to embed.

silver_thumb_250_250Social Design is an interesting altruistic concept, offering a small variety of products online. So what’s so ’social’ about it? A portion of of the sale of each item’s proceeds go straight to charity. Not entirely sure how the profits get split out but it’s something with potential that needs a little bit more time to gain momentum. The silver ring shown above can be purchased for $85 here, where there are also a variety of other more affordable material options as well. Might be a little chunky for my taste but might be perfect for gifting.

It would seem that the concept of modernism is alive and well in, uhm,  Ontario, Canada of all places. Architects did two things really well: 1) Design of a horizontal, lean floor plan that stretches the space parallel to the river to better take advantage of the view and 2) The use of Red Cedar, an indigenous material, throughout the interior and exterior.

The open layout of the interior space is fairly expected but the best part of the home in my opinion is how the scale and proportion of accents/storage mirrors the exterior cladding perfectly. Via Contemporist.

lastFm charts nyc vs. everyone else

nyvsworld

Apparently Netflix isn’t the only one doing more with all of that sweet, sweet usage data because LastFm took the time to map out how users of the service in 2009 based in NYC compare to the rest of the world. Or, put another way, if you want to see what you will most likely be listening to in about six months then look no further. If you want to see it in higher resolution then you can find a larger format one page .pdf on the LastFm blog here. Via Feltron.

Whereas I heart Banksy’s perspective on tagging, art, and corporations it looks like he might be a bit too old and soft to be riding on a skateboard with (or without) a fedora. That being said getting a ‘behind the scenes’ look at graffiti culture from the standpoint of one of it’s celebrities is pretty cool.
