much needed break

bored

Leaving a job today, going to nyc tomorrow, starting a new job on Monday. May be a few days before I get back to blogging, as I have other priorities. Plus, judging from the role and responsibilities at the new job I think I will only be able to post 1x per day, which is what it is.

fryday

bubble0

How do I find myself up past 1am on a Thursday night not due to going out and drinking like a fish? Wrapping up loose ends at the soon-to-be-former job is taking forever, and I don’t want to be that guy that leaves everyone else in the lurch. I hated that guy when it happened to me. .Gif via dvdp

Much better than his last appearance at TED, Dean Kamen makes the story behind his process more personal.

soap, by tyler durden

fight-club-soap

No idea how long it will take trademark lawyers to catch up with the makers of Fight Club Soap, so get it while you can.  I think that Chuck Palahniuk himself would appreciate knowing these were out there, and that they are safe to use. Even if you are going to mount them on your wall, I’m still not sure how anyone feels about paying $25 for a pair of bars of soap. Oh wait, people do it all the time at Ulta, right? Via uncrate

Crux of the argument is a stance on our education systems that has been attracting a great deal of attention as of late. He argues that we are being educated to become good workers, rather than creative thinkers. Whereas this isn’t groundbreaking (rather Pink Floydian) it’s great to see this being accepted by the mainstream in today’s age of globalization. After all, one way to differentiate is to supplant the West as thought leaders, instead of witnessing it’s erosion. Don’t get me started on failures to protect domestic IP…..Via GOOD.

radiolab’s stochasticity

radiolabber

In my humble opinion few people podcast with this degree of intellectual prowess and production quality. I strongly recommend listening to my favorite RadioLab podcast of 2009–A nice robust exploration of the concept of Stochasticicity and how it subconsciously affects your life regardless of how you live it. This episode touches on the issue of pattern recognition which reminds me that how no matter who you talk to, the ipod’s shuffle function just isn’t satisfactorily random. See the (dated) cnet article here.

the iron man that could have been

Just when you think someone could take a genre into a different direction vis costume/armor I see something like this online that tells me that there was an opportunity wasted. I’m sure this isn’t a design that we will see in the upcoming sequel because it’s simply toobadass , and a visual departure from cannon which would alienate the ‘True Believer’ fan base that obsessively blog about plot missteps. What I love about the sketch above is that the designer kind of knew that this somewhat ’steampunk’ approach wouldn’t get picked up since he kept it nice and light, very concept sketch in nature as opposed to a polished rendering. Funny, I couldn’t tell you where I stumbled upon this one—probably someTumblr site out there…
