new new balance 1500

new-balance-1500-fall-2010-front

Classic reinterpretation of an old theme. Suede and mesh uppers in either gray on gray or gray on some ‘not quite maroon dark red.’ I heart either color combination but the breath of fresh air is the more aggressive styling being brought to the detailing. Take the acute angles as opposed to the gentle curvatures of the toe caps for example. It’s pushing things into the future while carrying the retro along with in terms of proportion when it comes to the mesh vs. leather. I”m kinda pissed I have to wait until the fall with these. sak edition cons

Designer Ryusaku Hiruma has the freshest spin on the Chuck Taylor with the latest collaboration with Converse.  Handmade with grain leather and a perforated All Star logo and hand-stitching a pair will only run you $600. I don’t care that it has leather laces, no pair of sneakers is worth that much because if being hand made means that much you should figure out how to make these yourself–might be more cost effective. star player high-top

concon

is proving that he can reach into the vault of Converse and keep coming up with looks that keep Converse fresh. Case in point is the mash-up of the classic leather basketball high top and what his collaboration is best known for: a pared down Chuck Taylor. I heart how he maintains the sole while altering the rest, sticking to very simple colorways, shape/format of detailing, and sparing use of leather.  Get them here for $125.

common projects+evisu

A collaboration between these two companies equals yet another killer high end pair of kicks I can’t afford, but can appreciate from afar. Averaging between $200-500 for anything, I would love to own a pair of Common Projects sneakers but couldn’t bear to shell out the equivalent of a car payment for new shoes that I can’t try on because they don’t sell them anyplace I frequent. Still pretty slick stuff. Via Acquire.

converse crocs?

native-white-homme-shoes-515x392

Just when you didn’t think anything could be uglier than Crocs….one could only hope that these either get cancelled before they get made or an IP lawsuit stops them dead. In a way it makes the Croc style more acceptable and capitalizes on the current ‘perforated’ material trend. In a more important way (even as an unofficial crossover) they dilute the legacy of Converse and their resurgence over the last five years.  It’s fair to say that Cons have peaked in that respect but I would hate for something like this to be the nail in the coffin.

why would Nike invoke Piet Mondrian?

mondrain1Not sure how they manage the naming rights for dead artists that are, in this case, most likely rolling in their graves. To add insult to injury retailers are demanding $160+ for these online.  To me, dissing Dutch Painters is just another reason not to wear Nikes. Someone needs to learn a lesson not to attempt combining modern art with footwear. Unless of course you happen to be wearing (imaginary) Jeff Koons limited edition kicks that allow you to ironically wear his namesake while knowing that it’s more of a comment on the stupidity of others. But definitely not including yourself, or so one might think.

reebok’s 2010 opportunity

reebok-fallwinter2010-military-pack-1-540x382

I remember the Pump as vividly as I do Jr. High, but without the clumsy underpinnings of being a 13 years old wearing a hypercolor t-shirt and a complete lack of basketball skills. With the resurgence of the thicker, chunky high top Reebok has the chance to re-launch one of their signature shoes and late 80’s throwback icon in a high-brow, fashion centric way. It would seem that this effort is on the right track with uniform colorways and a contrasting liner but a large degree of potential remains (goodbye gloss plastic detailing). My advice? Take the Converse route, bring in some brand name designers, and get me a pair of kicks I can inflate/deflate/inflate while bored in meetings! Image Via HighSnobriety.

why i still have issues wearing nikes

muohn_11

As far as I know it’s not as if New Balance, Saucony, Reebok, and others manage production otherwise but I don’t think that Nike has been able to effectively shed this perception by the broader population to date. Also unsure as to how the acquisition of Converse has effected the way the Chuck Taylor is made…..found the image on Dropular or some other image-driven Tumbler service.

mors high top

I was excited about these UK imports until I saw the $300+ price tag. The detailing from Mors is almost perfect with the exception of the kick toe’s suede which really doesn’t need to be a different shade and material than the rest of the shoe. I really like the rear ‘piping’ detail that makes these stand apart from other brand’s offerings in this style. That being said if I really want some non-branded white high tops I could probably start looking someplace cheaper–unfortunately they wouldn’t be anywhere near as slick.

2010 air jordans

aj2010Are these actually astronaut boots intended to be worn whenever watching Space Jam or something? These things are hideously over designed to justify their $170 price tag. Uhm how exactly does having a porthole near your ankle help your mobility? Via Acquire.
